The MLK Commission attended and supported the annual Juneteenth Celebration at Nimisila Park. Juneteenth is the oldest national celebration commemorating the official end of enslavement in the Confederate States. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863 freeing all enslaved persons, the individuals living in the Confederate states were not notified until Union Troops came to Galveston Bay, TX on June 19, 1865. This day is also called Jubilee Day and has now become a Federal holiday under the administration of President Joe Biden.
