On May 18, 2023 a banquet was held at the Holiday Inn in Belden Village, in memory of Judge Ira G. Turpin and the Turpin Memorial Scholarship Fund. The theme “Education and Excellence – Go Hand in Hand,” was the theme. The evening’s Master of Ceremony was Stephen A. Perry and reflections were made by Corey Minor Smith, ESQ, Senior Counsel for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The keynote speaker was Kyle L. Stone, Stark County Prosecuting Attorney. Scholarships were given to individuals who majored in law. Three $500.00 scholarships and one $1,000.00 were given out. Delegate and MLK Commissioner Viola Fisher stated that the MLK Commission was proud to support the event because it exemplified our mission statement…”to promote racial harmony and bring about progressive systemic change. The awardees with their interest in law were creating change and would impact the system from within.
